Baby Photography - Look Them In The Eye
Unless you're trying to show how tiny your baby is, you don't usually want to take a picture of them from your normal standing position.

Instead, get down to their level!

If they're standing or sitting, the camera lens should be at about the top of their head. Now you'll get a portrait of their face in the proper perspective.

Go ahead and try it. Take some pictures standing above them. Then take some pictures where the camera is way below their head (you may have to lay on the floor ). Then try taking some at their level. Now review your images and see which ones you like better for a portrait.

This of course is good advice when doing just about anything with your child, not just photographing them. Getting down to their level when you talk to them or play with them, makes the experience so much better for them and for you.

If they ask you a question, don't look down and say "what?" Bend or kneel down, smile, and look them in the eye.

The comment posted by Marcy is true . . . the pictures come out really good, ive done it. Another thiing you might want to consider is, taking the pictures at the time of day when your baby is more active/playful or just plain happy. My baby is 7 months old and she's never been photographed by professionals (besides the hospital pics, which I could've done.) yet, i still get asked each month where i took her. Put a nice blanket in the background, put them inside a nice basket with them peeking out . . . there is a lot of thing you can do to make it fun and look good.
